Frequently asked questions:

Will a second language interfere with my child's English ability?

In most cases, learning another language enhances a child's English ability. Children can learn much about the English language by learning the structure of other languages; common vocabulary also helps children learn the meaning of new words in English. Experimental studies have shown that no long-term delay in native English language development occurs in children participating in second language classes.

If my child's school does not offer language study, what can I do to help establish a program?

Speak to the school principal about your interest in seeing a program established. Determine what type of program best fits your needs, then join with other parents interested in starting up a program and discuss the possibility during PTA meetings. Write to the teachers, the school board, and the school district headquarters. Many resources are available to help parents and teachers establish a second language program. Contact Us.

Is one hour a week enough?

Sixty minutes of exposure to a second language can impact the way students learn any language. It will leave a strong foundation in the student’s mindand leave him /her ready to continue learning a second language at middle or high school levels.

Is my child really learning something?

Yes, improvements may not be noticeable in the beginning, but your child is learning. Children develop a strong foundation and most importantly, they develop an ability to understand a second language.

Most learners begin their acquisition process with a "silent period", in which they speak very little if at all. For some this is a period of language shock, in which the learner actively rejects the incomprehensible input of the new language. However, research has shown that many "silent" learners are engaging in private speech (sometimes called "self-talk"). While appearing silent, they are rehearsing important survival phrases and lexical chunks.

As a middle and high school Spanish teacher, I have seen a huge difference among students who had taken Spanish classes earlier in life and the students who had never taken any language classes. Remember that learning a second language takes time and dedication. Even if you cannot see it, children are learning.

My child did not register at the beginning of the school year, can he or she still register? Will my child be behind of his or her classmates?

Yes, your child can register at any time during the school year. Your child will not be behind. We have designed a program where the students learn something new every month. If your child misses a theme one month, he can still learn the new theme the following month.

My child took these classes last year; he should be placed in an advance or intermediate class, right?

The students cannot be considered intermediate or advanced only because they have taken ten or twenty hours of a class.  The students who took classes with us last year will continue working with the same curriculum, but it will be taught at a higher and deeper level, so the students will continue improving their language skills.
